Android 2.2 pushed to Droid next week, some as early as tonight

Not  to be outdone by Sprint, Verizon will also roll out Android 2.2 to the Motorola Droid starting next week. The push will start for most users the week of August 2nd, but a Motorola forums manager reports that a small set of users might receive the update tonight as part of a pre-launch test.

We thought that Verizon might update all their high-end Droids at the same time, but we recently heard that Motorola was still working out the bugs for their Motoblur version of Android 2.2 for the Droid X and Droid 2.

The original Droid has a stock version of Android, so it has been in testing for a much longer period of time and this early release looks like a direct response to Sprint (and their claim of being first with Android 2.2).

Verizon is also testing Android 2.2 for the HTC Droid Incredible…

How to manually install Android 2.2 on the HTC EVO 4G

Sprint delivered on their promise to release Android 2.2 to a select group of testers today with a broad roll out is scheduled for Tuesday August 2nd. You can wait through the weekend to automatically receive the update or you can spend a few minutes of your time and manually install it now.

HTC has posted the file needed to update to Android 2.2 and it can be easily installed in a few simple steps. All you have to do is download the file from HTC, rename it update.zip, and flash it. Feel free to use your PC to download and rename the file or you can perform all these tasks on your phone using an app like Linda File manager.

Keep in mind this update is intended for stock phones that are running an unmodified version of the operating system. If you have previously hacked or rooted your EVO,…

HTC makes it official, Android 2.2 roll-out for HTC Desire starting this weekend

It’s official, the Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire will be rolling out to handsets in Europe starting this weekend. We were hoping that HTC’s Android 2.2 update for the HTC Desire would start rolling out yesterday, but it looks like Mark Moons jumped the gun just a little. The Froyo update for the HTC Desire will enable 720p video recording, support iTunes sync functionality, and add the application sharing widget and the caller ID features found on the recently released HTC Wildfire.

The OTA update will start pinging unlocked HTC Desire handsets this weekend. Currently, the Android 2.2 update is slated only for the unlocked version of the HTC Desire. Operator specific versions of the Desire will most likely be getting the Froyo update within the next few weeks, when final testing is completed.

Android and Me recommends: App of the Week July 30, 2010

We’re launching yet another semi-regular column on Android and Me. Every week (or so) we will ask one of our staffers about an application they love/can’t live without and share that app with you, our readers.

I will be starting out this piece by sharing an app you’ve probably heard of that launched this week to some market issues, psx4droid.

psx4droid is a playstation emulator that will allow you to play your cherished original playstation games right from your Android phone. I have been spending the last few days getting re-lost in Final Fantasy 7, and thoroughly enjoy the experience I’ve had with psx4droid thus far. The button layout is solid, and the application overall just feels like it’s well put together and it really gets the job done.

So if you’re a nerd like me, and/or loved the original Playstation and want to enjoy Playstation games on your…
