Threads are finally here. Join the league.

If you’ve been paying attention around here lately, you know that big changes are afoot. A few months back we rolled out tweaks to our scoring system. More recently, we launched new user profile pages. When we deployed those changes, astute users noticed an extra tab, not yet live.
That tab was for Threads and we’re happy to announce that they’re finally here. Threads aim to be a lot of things, but at the core I guess you’d call it our version of a forum (just don’t let it hear you call it that). We’ve spent a lot of time on boards over the years, and recently even more time blogging, and Threads are a mashup of the two.
Threads do a lot of things differently than some forums, most notably costing you points to start a new thread. While anyone can participate in the comments (just like on a regular blog post), starting a new thread is a privilege reserved for users with enough points to previously prove themselves trustworthy. We hope that restricting posting new threads even a little bit will help with the traditional noise ratio you find on some forums.
Starting a thread won’t just cost you points, because you’ll actually earn points back for each comment your thread gets. We hope this light competition will foster a creative and thoughtful environment, not unlike our real blogging practices. Speaking of which, exemplary threads are actually eligible to get promoted up to a real article on Android and Me.
If you’d like to learn more about how threads will function, you can check the documentation in our new Docs section or just dive into Threads now.
Some recent threads
To get things rolling, I thought it’d be fun to post some of the active threads we’ve had over the past week of beta testing.
#thenextinstall Help us pick the next apps in the rough – Taylor is using this thread to source apps for his weekly column where he reviews little-known yet awesome applications and games.
Review your Galaxy Note for a free case – Besides points, sometimes a thread can earn you real prizes, as was the case with this challenge. Three lucky users scored a new case from @SpeckProducts.
The future of tablets – Pontificating on the future of tablets, and why they aren’t more utilized as text books and the like.
Best looking Android device? A quest to find the best looking Android device, from a strictly hardware standpoint.
What’s your favorite Twitter app? – The age old question: which Twitter client reigns supreme?
In addition to always being located at /threads, you’ll be able to find the most recent threads in the sidebar, visible on almost any page on the site. We hope that you guys enjoy this tool as much as we did building it. Join us in Threads and let us know what you’re up to in the world of Android!
Oh, and if you somehow still don’t have an And Me Account, it’s never too late to join!
Welcome to the best Android and Me yet (for now)
Greetings and salutations, kind sirs, for today you are looking at the newest build of Android and Me. While we’re in no way finished, we figured now would be a good time to roll out some of the changes we’ve been working on.
What’s changed, you ask? Lots of stuff.
Most exciting, we’ve taken our first steps towards deploying our user rating system. Now anyone with an Android And Me account can rack up points for leaving comments (and score extra points when other users up-vote your content). Along with the point system, you’ll find a user widget in the top right sidebar (when logged in) that displays your avatar, point total, last login, recently viewed articles and your most recent comments. We’ll be greatly expanding the user profile options in the next few weeks, but we wanted to go ahead and start letting you guys earn some points while we build out the rest of the system.
While the main masthead for the site remains mostly unchanged for now, we’ve added a bit of spice to hold us over to the next iteration. In an effort to make the entire section more timely, the popular posts now have a relative time stamp and the secondary navigation has been replaced with a list of trending tags. For now, these trending tags are built solely on our own content, but in the future I hope to plug these into the pulse of the internet.
In the sidebar, we’ve got new Hotly debated and Top commenters widgets. Hotly debated, as before, will show you the posts with the most comments in the past few weeks. Top commenters will highlight specific users from the past 5 days whose comments received the most up-votes. Moving forward, we’re going to try to feature more user content on the site. Posting solid comments and racking up a high score will soon come with perks.
When viewing a single entry, you’ll be followed by our new social buttons. We ditched the ShareThisAddAnythingEtc plugins and went 3rd party official buttons only. We think they’ll lead to more accurate counts and we encourage you to use them as much as your fellow social users can stand.
We’ve also built a new type of editorial post, which we’re calling the hero post, that should make its debut here any day now. You’ll know it when you see it; hero posts are full width and will center around an editorial illustration or typesetting from @angiedoes. We’ll use hero posts to draw attention to any content worth a daily feature.
We’ll also be bringing back our newsletter. Thousands of you have subscribed and we haven’t sent a thing in months. That’s changing. We’ll be back to our old trick of giving away prizes just for opening mail, so sign up while we’re still being lazy.
I also wanted to take this moment to thank the team that’s been working with me. This has been one of the most fun builds I’ve ever been a part of and everyone has played a huge role. Angie not only did most of the design here, she’s actually been in the CSS making edits. I’ve also been working (in my home, no less) with a new developer, Joseph, who you can now find listed in the sidebar. We’ve also taken on a slew of new authors in the past few months, and the Android And Me family is as tight as it’s ever been. And even though Taylor is officially out of the picture, we all still owe him a huge debt for all he’s done and is doing here.
Along with my staff I need to thank you, the loyal reader, for making all this possible. We keep growing because you guys keep showing up each day (for some reason). I speak for the entire Android And Me family when I say:
Thank you. We genuinely appreciate it.
Android and Me v3.2 Release Notes (small layout changes)
We just pushed a minor update live and figured we should make a post about the changes. As you’ve probably already noticed (unless you’re a salty RSS subscriber), we’ve moved back to a two-column layout.
We did this for a couple of reasons. First, we are in progress on a new build which features a two-column layout. We thought switching ahead of time would help make the transition easier when we actually launch the new site. Second, the extra space allows for a wider main column, meaning larger post images.
So, until the new site is ready, enjoy the open space and bigass images!

New to Android and Me: Favorites
We’re happy to finally announce a feature we promised you a long time ago (turns out making web sites is hard). But starting today, any logged in user will be presented with a Favorites menu in the top of the left sidebar. With favorites, any tag can be saved to a personal list for viewing or filtering at a later date.
Favorites on Android and Me work as you’ve likely come to expect. Any time you’re viewing a tag page (ex: #popular, #htc), you’ll be presented with an ADD link for saving the tag.
From there you can view a single tag or combine a handful of tags. Want news only about T-Mobile? Done. Want all the news about HTC, Motorola, and Samsung? Done. With Favorites you can combine any number of tags into a completely custom stream of all the Android news that matters to you.
If you’re looking for some popular tags to favorite, try looking in the right sidebar. There you’ll find a list of our most-used tags, including winners like: #froyo, #twitter, or #Sprint. Favorite as many as you want then come back later and filter them into all sorts of wacky combinations.
If you’re still confused, we’ve put together the following short video to drive the point home. Watch it for a quick visual summary of Favorites in action:
We hope that Favorites will make it easier for you guys to find all the relevant news you’re after or even helps you discover something you might have missed.
Note: Favorites aren’t displayed on the mobile site. For the time being, consider this desktop-only. Over the next few weeks we’ll look at getting everything in place so you can manage your favorites on the go.

Our secret SXSW party! And new tees! Oh my!
Update: Ok so we totally need more space than what we reserved. We are going to talk with our host to see if we can get more room. Update coming when we have one.
Update 2: We talked with our host Opal Devine’s and it looks like we can accommodate up to 100 people, but you must RSVP so we can give them a headcount by Friday.
Psssst! Taking place this Saturday in Austin, TX is a party so fresh we just found out about it ourselves. And that’s saying something, because it’s our party. Android and Me will be in Austin, TX (as always) for SXSW 2010 and to get things started we are having a secret party this Saturday night.
Space is extremely limited but if you’d like to attend please email RSVP@androidandme.com to be added to the list. There’s a very good chance it will fill up immediately but send a message anyway if you’d like to be added to a waiting list (we are working on getting more space). Upon confirmation you’ll receive an email with the exact time, location, etc. We wish we could party with all you guys, but for now, strict RSVPs are a must.
It looks like we’ll be in good company. The entire Android and Me core team will be on hand, as well and a bunch of members of the Austin Android User Group (our most awesome co-host). Also already on the list is @bendroidLLC and @cookingcapsules, two awesome Android developers responsible for some cool stuff in the Android market.
New Shirts
To commemorate the event we’re having some special tees made just for SXSW 2010. Anyone coming to the party gets one for free. We’ll also have extra shirts to hand out throughout the week so be on the lookout for some goofy looking guys handing out shirts.
We’ll also try to give away a couple here on the site too for those would couldn’t attend. The tees go to production tomorrow morning and we just nailed down the final design, which you can see to the right.
Come find us
We’ll be at random events all week (hopefully) so keep an eye on our Twitter account for updates. We’ve got a few other surprises up our sleeves that should be rolling out over the next few days and are really just looking forward to meeting all you guys.
One event we are definitely attending is Android: What We’ve Learned About Mobile in the Last Two Months presented by Google’s Erick Tseng. We’ll also be hitting up gdgt live in Austin, quite the gathering of awesome tech companies.
We’ll also be trying to shoot plenty of photos and video during the week so if you’ve got anything to show off, please find us. Hit us up on Twitter or use our contact form here on the site and let us know if you’ve got something you need to show the world.
Excited? I know I am.

Android Screenshots on the Way
Figured out how to take screenshots of apps on my Droid. Involves installing the Android SDK, but pretty simple overall. Going to be useful for app reviews! Also played a little with Google Buzz through the Maps updates today. Not sure what to make of it yet.
Found an official AIM app whilst browsing the market too. Installed and looks pretty slick. No one wanted to talk with me but there’s a cute bunny to make me feel better. Why? Who knows, but the wife liked it!
See after the break for some screenshots from the official WordPress app for Android.
Androidgynous is alive!
Hello! Still a bit ugly but we’re up, and posting from my Droid.
I just installed the official WordPress Android app from the market. It’s easy to set up and get posting. Looks like I can unapprove comments from there, but apparently I can’t actually trash them. Hmm. Will write a proper review when I’ve got things set up to my liking.
Going to post QR Codes for apps too. This ones’s a test. Let me know in the comments where it takes you!
