Timeline: Learn the history of Android

The Android Operating System is the ideal example of the pursuit of happiness. It has worked hard from the bottom, building its way up to where it is now–the top smartphone OS in the planet, with 550,000 activations a day. Many of us have been with Android since the beginning, rocking our G1′s, while others adopted Android once the OS was more refined. Either way, we’re part of a huge family now. And it’s not a bad idea to learn about our roots.

[X]cube Labs has put together this nifty timeline, highlighting all the important events since Android, Inc….

LG G2x users manually update to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread

We’ve been complaining about it, we’ve been waiting for it, and it’s now here! G2x owners have been stuck on Android 2.2 Froyo since its release date last April. A pain, we know. But LG G2x owners can now manually update their devices to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread via the LG Mobile Support Tool. (You will need a PC).

We last heard about this update in June, but the rumored dates came and went. This morning, we finally heard more news.

Sadly it’s not an OTA update, but the manual install is not as complicated as one may think….

HTC Droid Incredible 2 Gingerbread update available now

It can be painful to see devices released without Android 2.3, but it’s happening. The HTC Droid Incredible 2 was one of those good ol’ Froyo devices, and it seems this smartphone is beating its 4G LTE Verizon comrades in the Gingerbread race. Proud owners of the HTC Droid Incredible 2 will be happy to know they can now snatch their Android 2.3 Gingerbread update! Details about this update showed up last week on Verizon’s support page, so we definitely knew it was coming soon.

If you haven’t downloaded your update file yet, simply go to Settings >…

Video: Google Maps 5.7 update brings Transit Navigation, other convenient features

Google Maps updates tend to be very minor, since the app is already very well designed. This is definitely not the case for its new update to version 5.7, which brings Transit Navigation, search categories and Photo Viewer for Place pages.

Transit Navigation and Updated Directions

Transit Navigation brings stop-by-stop directions for public transportation in over 400 cities. It basically works as you would expect; it determines your location through GPS and lets you know when/where to get off. Google Maps even alerts you via the notification bar if you happen to be doing anything else on your device….

Google Mobile site gets optimized for better searching

It’s only been a couple weeks since Google revamped its mobile site, adding a location-based system for finding places near you (restaurants, coffee shops, bars, etc.). But the search giant is working around the clock, and today seems like another good day for the Google Mobile site.

Just when I thought my day was over, I went online. And what did I find? Voila, an all-new mobile site from Google with tabbed options at the top (much more like the full Google site) and a set of colorful icons that appear when your finger slides down the screen. These…

Biggest Android usage study researching smartphone habits – are you in?

One of the best things about Android is the sense of community among its users. We’re sharing locations with each other, updating our status in social networks and messaging each other all day long. The sense of community doesn’t end there, though. How many times have you taken time to help a fellow Android user? Whether it’s for simple things like recommending an app or spending hours trying to root a device, I’ve noticed we’re always there for each other. Just how far are you willing to go for the Android community, though? Would you be willing to share all…

PayPal sues Google due to the release of Google Wallet (Update: Google responds, ready for the fight)

Google Wallet took the stage today, with an introduction to what the consumer future holds for us. Though we were all very excited to see this, not everyone is exactly happy about Google’s achievements. Soon after the announcement of Google Wallet and Google Offers, PayPal filed a 28-page lawsuit against Google, pretty much stating that the “search giant misappropriated their company secrets”.

Osama Bedier[1], who pretty much led the floor at this morning’s announcement, used to be a key executive for PayPal. He used to work on the company’s mobile-payments platform, and the claim is that…

Rumor: HTC Puccini to be powered by Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon chip

The not very elusive HTC Puccini is making a public appearance once again. As we saw a week ago, the HTC Puccini is a Honeycomb tablet headed to AT&T with LTE support. Today, we got one more piece of the puzzle, the tablet will be powered by Qualcomm’s MSM8660 Snapdragon dual-core CPU.

We last saw the MSM8660 at CES back in January, and while the CPU showed promise, it lost the race to market to NVIDIA’s Tegra 2. A few months later, Tegra 2 is everywhere from Audi vehicles to phones but we’ve yet to see a…

The Android Market is growing at an astonishing pace. With 4.5 billion apps already installed and bound to becoming the biggest app store in the world in the coming months, the Market is turning into priority number one for mobile developers. As a result of this, we’re already seeing many iOS apps make the jump over to Android.
